This book starts in Rome in 1943 – OK, I thought, a wartime novel, but with a difference. Yes, we have two strands, then and now, and they seem to flow and blend seamlessly: I didn’t have to go back to remind myself of details. An utterly absorbing and thoroughly enjoyable book.
